Thank you for looking at my donation page. There's a good chance that you've seen it before as I've lost count of the number of times I've shaved my head to raise money for Childhood Cancer research. I've shaved with my son, my daughter and my dad; I've shaved with friends, coaches & co-workers. I've shaved with 3 different companies and I've always had a departed young hero in my heart. I thought I was done with headshaving but then I learned about Ryan's fight going on right now.
Ryan is a brave 15 year old who I have literally known since before he turned 1. We're not bosom buddies and I suspect he very politely faked his way through remembering me with good parental coaching the last time we were together. But just before Christmas Ryan was fighting a cough & shortness of breath that eventually lead to a chest x-ray... Imagine the call from your doctor 3 hours later telling you to drop what you are doing & go directly to Sick Kids.
Ryan has been diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. He started a 6-month course of chemotherapy right away and will be in therapy for at least 2 years.
Ryan was healthy & remains good and smart and kind. He is the last person that should pull this short straw and the moment he does he becomes my kid, your kid and every kid. HSC & the other C17 Canadian childhood cancer research hosptials we are fundraising for are full - and NO KID deservies to be there.
I am shaving my head again so that one day soon when he is well enough to do it, Ryan can rub my bald head and understand that I did this for him - and know that there are countless other people known & unknown to him in his corner. I ask you to pledge me with a donation for all of Ryan's current & future peers at Sick Kids whom we will never meet or know. Every one of them has a unique, tough journey and we have a chance to help them take a step.
